Yamaha TRX850 Specification, Photos and review

Yamaha TRX850 Specification

Among the entire range of motorcycles "Yamaha" stands out released in 1995, the TRX 850 and presented a year later in European markets.

Externally, the Yamaha resembles the Ducati 900 Super Sport, which makes it difficult to attribute it to a specific class: the presence of a parallel twin is not the most outstanding power and modest nosing impart features of a naked-bike, and the short wheelbase and rigid chassis belong to sport bikes.

Yamaha TRX850

Yamaha TRX 850 is equipped with a ten-valve two-cylinder engine with a dry crankcase, which is a modification of the TDM850 engine. The second generation TDM is similar to the TRX unit alternating flashes through 270 o , but differs in the settings of the carburetor and camshaft. The character inherent in sportbikes is fully manifested in the operation of the engine: the power set is even and smooth, the thrust is maintained throughout the entire rev range. The power units are characterized by minimal vibration load, which is very unusual because the nature of the work is similar to engines with a 90-degree camber of the cylinders.

The frame of the sports bike Yamaha TRX 850 is made of steel pipes and the construction resembles the Ducati brand "birdcage". The original appearance of the frame is not its only plus: it has excellent rigidity. The sporty character of the undercarriage is emphasized by the brakes and suspension, borrowed from the Yamaha FZR motorcycle range. The rear shock absorber and front fork are equipped with a wide range of settings. The Brembo braking system is represented by front 320 mm disc mechanisms with two four-piston calipers and a rear two-piston caliper.

The seat of the motorcycle is flat, comfortable and quite spacious, it allows you to change the landing on long trips by shifting the driver back and forth. Hard seat cushions can somewhat spoil long trips, which, however, is easily eliminated by replacing the seat.

Why Should we buy a TRX 850?

Despite the fact that the motorcycle is considered a universal model, most motorists buy it for trips within the city limits. Efficient front brakes of the motorcycle, ideal handling and excellent maneuverability make the TRX 850 the best bike for driving around the city. However, it can also be operated on country roads: a semi-fairing makes the ride comfortable, maintaining thrust throughout the rev range allows you to quickly pick up speed without driving the engine. However, the TRX 850 is an ideal option for street racing: it is enough to increase the engine power a little to make a full-fledged sport bike out of a motorcycle.

The engine, installed on the Yamaha TRX 850, was the reason that all the motorcycles of the Japanese manufacturer received the nickname “maslozhorok”. The presence of five valves per cylinder is not the best way to affect oil consumption, which is most pronounced when driving at high speed or turning the engine to maximum. You can reduce appetites by replacing the wiper rings and caps: the parts are sold only in sets, their purchase and replacement will cost the owner 10-12 thousand rubles.

Owners of the Yamaha TRX 850 in a review note the need to diagnose and adjust valve clearance every 12-15 thousand kilometers. In the absence of proper care, it may be necessary to replace both the seats and the engine valves, which costs the owner a large sum. Motorcycle battery also requires proper care and attention.

Before buying a motorcycle with hands, it is advisable to check the consumption of engine oil. This is done easily - just bring a sheet of white paper to the muffler after the engine is warming up. Black spots or drops appearing on paper suggest that you shouldn't get a TRX 850 better.

The lubricant is replaced with a Yamaha TRX 850 by unscrewing the plug screw located in the lower left part of the power unit. Many owners are not aware of such a design feature of the motorcycle and change the oil by unscrewing the oil filter: this option is possible, but it allows you to drain only a liter of lubricant, not more. Models serviced in this way, it is better not to acquire in order to avoid problems with the engine in the future.

Mikuni BDST carburetors installed on the TRX 850 and some other brands and models of motorcycles, after a few years of operation, begin to prepare too rich fuel mixture and are not adjustable. The reason for this lies in the wear of the needle and the deformation of the well. You can fix the problem by installing a new carburetor or replacing the well and needles. Such repairs will cost the owner of Yamaha 8-12 thousand rubles.

Motorcycle transmissions can also cause some inconvenience. Repair of the transmission in the near future is signaled by a faulty second gear. Restoration of transmission in advanced cases can result in 30-40 thousand spent on the acquisition of components and repair work.

The suspension of the Yamaha TRX 80 is distinguished by its reliability, simplicity of design and the almost complete absence of problems. The situation is similar with the brake system, which requires only checking the status of brake discs and calipers. In the absence of proper care, it may be necessary to replace brakes and discs. With hard braking, the brakes provide effective traction and a quick stop for the Yamaha TRX 850. The rear brake's technical specifications fail a little: it can easily lock the rear wheel.

The motorcycle is equipped with a steel frame, differing in reliability and maintainability - a non-professional welder can eliminate any defects associated with it. By design, the frame strongly resembles the Ducati birdcage. The installed semi-fairing protects against oncoming air flow.

Yamaha TRX 850 is equipped with a fairly modest wheels: rear tires installed 160 / 60-17. Tire replacement is very budget and allows you to save a lot, because the new tires have an affordable price.

Despite the reliability of the gearbox, many motorists consider it the worst at Yamaha. It works indistinctly, the lever moves are too large, the second gear very quickly becomes unusable during tough use. In the absence of timely maintenance, it may be necessary to repair and replace gears, a bobbin shaft and forks.

Comfort level

The lightweight and rigid frame, coupled with equally stiff suspensions, provide the Yamaha TRX 850 with ideal handling and equate it to full-fledged sportbikes, allowing you to easily maneuver at high speed and enter sharp turns.

Hard suspension and frame, unfortunately, adversely affect the level of comfort: the driver and passenger seats are not very soft, the sports suspension makes the bike too aggressive, not intended for a quiet ride. The controversial work of the transmission also worsens the situation and the overall impression of the TRX 850.

Conclusion

Despite such drawbacks and certain nuances of control and operation, the Yamaha TRX 850 continues to enjoy considerable popularity, confirming its title as one of the best motorcycles of the Yamaha model line.
