The new main feature of this model was the new engine with the Bore x stroke spec of 56 x 50.6 mm to 54x54mm. This has been able to stimulate peak speed by getting a better balance of strength and torque character based on overall intake/exhaust efficiency, rather than simply increasing the power supply.
This model was also characterized by its forged piston "metal powder" with excellent heat resistance and a new design framework that eliminated the saddle rail. On this machine, Norick Abe set his first GP victory at the Japan GP, shaving about two seconds of his qualifying time to complete the fastest lap. Also on the OWJ1, L. Capirossi won the final round of the season, the Australian GP.
