1985 Yamaha FZ250 PHAZER Genesis Specs

It was  FZ250 Phazer that broke through the shell and took a big step in performance. The spec that generated 45PS, which is the upper limit of the class at that time, at an ultra-high speed of 14500rpm, clearly pursued performance and running. After the two-stroke 250cc replicas and the 400cc four-cylinders have settled, the spot begins to hit the 4-stroke 250cc 4-cylinder model.

In March 1983, Suzuki took the lead and released the GS250FW, but as you can see from the specs of 36PS / 11000rpm, the goal was to embody the "four-cylinder 250" first, rather than the performance.

Phaser's water-cooled four-cylinder engine is a unit in line with the “Genesis philosophy” advocated in FZ750, and it was not possible to use five valves due to the size of the combustion chamber. The intake / exhaust flow was straightened by tilting the cylinder forward significantly.

The SP250F class for the 4-stroke 250cc machine was newly established in the local race of Sportsland SUGO, the knee of Yamaha, in the year it was released, and the FZ250 phaser shows overwhelming speed against rival 2-cylinders . In addition to its speed, many racing fans were fascinated by the high-frequency sound that resonates in the mountains of SUGO and that does not connect with the exhaust sound and engine sound.

Combining a stylish design with a light and compact body and an engine that is surprisingly easy to handle even in normal use, the FZ250 has recorded good sales with the heart of a female user who wanted to ride a 4-cylinder. This is a new benchmark for the 4-st 250cc class.

The domestic 4-cylinder 250cc pioneer is Suzuki's GS250FW, but it was this phaser that established its popularity. The engine does not resemble any motorcycle in the world and the engine grows without stress up to a super high speed of 17,000 rpm. It was a sense of the near future.

When the manufacturer's test ride came to the editorial department, testers, editorial staff, staff such as photographers and writers competed for the order of the test ride, and when returning from the test ride of about 15 minutes, the face was flushed, `` 4 quarters, great I remember saying yesterday, saying “...”.

There is no doubt that the appeal of the phaser was the high-speed engine, but the maximum speed did not reach 170km / h, and the 0-400m acceleration was in the 13 second range, which was a big difference from the 4-cylinder 400cc model. However, when running on the circuit, the time difference from 400cc is surprisingly small. The reason is the high cornering speed.

The light and compact phaser is thrust into the corner and the turning speed itself is fast. Moreover, the stability of the full bank is high because the center of gravity of the body is low. In addition, the effective power band is wide from 8000 rpm to 16,000 rpm, and even in corners where the gear ratio does not match, it is impossible to work and the delay in straight can be recovered at the corner.

It reacts smoothly up to the middle speed range and is easy for women to handle, but running with high-frequency exhaust sounds like a jet is super sports.

It was in these two aspects that Fazer gained popularity with the release in March 1985. Although it has become a valuable presence in the used car market only for models 30 years ago, if you can get it luckily, you should feel the challenge spirit that Yamaha showed in the midst of the motorcycle boom.
